Piano Safari - The Journey Begins

Join author Katherine Fisher for an overview of the Piano Safari Method. Learn how rote teaching, technique, and intervallic reading combine to create creative and independent musicians.

How Does It Work?

Compared to other methods, Piano Safari progresses deliberately in terms of reading yet quickly in terms of playing. This builds foundational skills while developing a strong ear and technique in the student.

Repertoire Book 1 is composed of 6 sections (Introductory Unit and Units 1-5). Book 1 is 133 pages. The average student takes 2-3 months to complete each unit. Most piano students take a full year (at minimum the school year) to complete Level 1.

By design, certain parts of Piano Safari work well with other teaching methods, specifically the Rote Pieces. The Piano Safari Pattern Pieces books, with their companion audio tracks, were designed for just this purpose. They contain the Rote Pieces from Piano Safari Repertoire Books 1 and 2.

Piano Safari
Reviews

Occasionally, a new Piano Method appears that not only goes beyond the tried and true but also applies intelligent and creative approaches that are simply fun. Piano Safari is a refreshing, well conceived, and pedagogically sound endeavour.

The enthusiastic creators of this new series for the young beginner base their work on the simple premise of learning through doing, in order words, through playing. Combining rote teaching with intervallic reading around landmark notes, young students will also learn sound technique principles that will carry them throughout life…This method gets my vote for the young beginner!

Author of Music Matters Blog

“Piano Safari is the only method I know of that is based on this experiential and playing-based philosophy. Instead of reading music notation being the core, students are taught to develop beautiful technique, a sense of musicality, freedom to explore, discover, and create, an internal rhythmic pulse, and proficient sight-reading through a rich musical selection of rote pieces, improvisation experiences, guided compositions, and excellently sequenced reading skills.”

“Oh, my goodness… I am sorry to sound like a broken record, but I have to tell you again what a ball I am having with your books! I have not had this much fun teaching in a long, long time. Every turn of the page is a new adventure. The students are creating music at the piano right from the start, focused on artistry and creativity and the simple joy of music making.”

Alexandra Jones

Centre for Musical Minds, Texas

“Piano Safari is like a melting pot of the best piano methods out today. Dr. Julie Knerr and Katherine Fisher searched for the best and most important technical exercises and musical ideas and transformed them into a clear, fun safari-based piano method. The combination of rote and reading pieces immediately submerses students into different sounds and colors not found in most early piano methods.”

Amy Chaplin

Piano Teacher, Studio 88

“I have been searching for years for a method that really satisfied me. Specifically, I was looking for books that not only offered a way of teaching technique (arm/hand technique, not scales, etc.) in a fun, easy manner, but that incorporated songs more exciting than those in middle C position offered in first level books. Over the years, I’ve had countless parents confess that their kids, or even they themselves as children, found lessons boring in the past. Perhaps this is why so many students leave lessons with less than 3 years of study!”
